In the last 50 years, New Mexico has been the 6th fastest warming state and seen a decrease in water levels by up to 20%. To address the impact on agriculture and the local culture in Santa Fe, this proposed space aims to facilitate specialized research and experimentation dedicated to combating climate change effects. The envisioned complex not only provides a safe environment for research but also aims to disseminate environmental science and sustainable living knowledge to the community through classes and public lectures.
The dichotomy of organic and inorganic serves as wayfinding in greenhouse spaces. Greenhouses feature organic shapes, natural colors, and natural materials. Wet labs feature angular shapes, unnatural colors, and man-made materials, enticing exploration and learning. Upon entering a greenhouse, the user has a direct line of sight to the opposite end of the space where the wet lab resides. The viewers attention is caught by this difference upon entering, drawing them deeper into the space.
In each greenhouse, the public is able to get a glimpse of the lab space that is responsible for the greenhouse they are in. This allows the public to better understand the inner workings of the space they are inhabiting, and it allows the lab workers to enjoy the views of the greenhouse and to see people enjoying their work.
