The Melissa Basketball Arena will be used for basketball as well as volleyball, wrestling, presentations, award ceremonies and theatrical productions. With a large range of programs, it was important to find a design that would provide enough space and equipment while giving the spectators a monumental experience. The main entrance to this arena is located on the second floor, allowing the spectators to enter the concourse and view the game before getting to their seats. The existing campus conditions, combined with the client’s firm design and material preferences, made this project a welcome challenge to take on.

The Concourse wraps around the perimeter of the arena on the second floor, allowing for views of the court at all times. Additionally, direct access is provided to seats, concessions, restrooms, ADA/standing locations, and drinking fountains. At the four corners and half court line, there is space with data and power outlets that house multiple cameras to record and live-stream the game. The perimeter of the concourse utilizes a thin brick wainscot. The same bricks are used on the exterior of other buildings around the campus. The lower half of the seating can be pushed flat against the wall to allow for more court space, integral for practices and large wrestling competitions. The Hospitality Suite is the exclusive viewing area for coaches, parents, and high-profile guests. Premium materials and unique lighting fixtures give this space an elevated and classy feel.
